KUMON EDUCATIONAL
bfa Full Member
Learning for the long run: preparing a child to succeed both at school and beyond
Kumon's aim is for each and every child to become an independent, advanced learner, with a positive attitude to study. By studying the maths and English programmes, students develop independent learning skills and increased self-confidence as they work out how to overcome challenges by themselves.
Kumon Educational is the UK's largest supplementary education provider, offering maths and English study programmes for over 70,000 children of all ages and abilities.
Through their unique method, children are supported to reach an advanced level of study. By studying beyond the international standard for their age, children are best prepared to succeed in an increasingly global community.
In addition to developing academic ability, Kumon study fosters in students the mind-set and skills for self-learning. Kumon is an independent study programme, but students are never alone. Instructors provide the guidance students need to take learning into their own hands, increasing their motivation to succeed and achieve.
Every child is different, and so their programme of study should be too. Individualised programmes enable students to progress to an advanced level, at their own pace, so they can realise their potential and experience success. Kumon is learning for the long run: daily Kumon study can make all the difference.
The Kumon Method of Learning was developed in 1954 by Toru Kumon, both a parent and gifted teacher from Japan. He discovered his own son, Takeshi, was not fulfilling his potential in maths at school and so created worksheets for him to do at home every day. The Kumon Institute of Education was established in 1958; for over 50 years the unique method of learning has helped children across the globe to excel academically and develop a love of learning.
Basic Information:
Skills and knowledge required
Kumon are interested in people who have a passion for education and the development of children, who want to run their own business and are proficient in Maths and English. Full training is provided by Kumon. Instructors come from a wealth of different backgrounds, but all successful applicants will be educated to degree level or equivalent, have a full driving licence and have the right to work in the UK. Every potential Instructor must also pass a proficiency test in both Maths and English.
As an independent business owner, the decisions you make will directly affect the performance of your business and you will need to invest time and money in growing your centre. You will not only have to support students, but recruit them too and therefore you must be energetic, self-motivated and willing to invest in your students and your centre. You will need to recruit and manage a strong team of assistants who will help support and nurture your students. As Kumon is a people business your role also involves acting as an ambassador for Kumon in your area, as well as communicating with children, their parents, and your local community. You will also be responsible for maintaining student records, managing finances and stock, and dealing with legal requirements.
Of course, most importantly, you will be an educator and responsible for the individualised instruction of each of your students through the unique Kumon Method. You will be a student yourself as you continue to learn from colleagues, staff, and indeed from your own students, as well as studying the programmes.
Many Instructors are Kumon parents who have seen how valuable the programme is and have decided to join our expanding network.
Franchise fee
When buying a start-up franchise, you will be required to invest a minimum of £3,000. This includes £400 for your initial licence fee, with £2,600 earmarked for marketing during the first 12 months (15 months if taking over an existing centre). In addition you will need to make provision for rent and other running costs. In the case of franchise re-sales, a fee is paid to the outgoing Instructor for taking over their business.

BRITISH FRANCHISE ASSOCIATION
In 1977, the major franchise companies in the UK decided to set up their own association. The British Franchise Association (bfa), was formed to act in the interests of the industry as a whole in assessing and accrediting franchising companies as those which meet its criteria for the structure of the franchise business, the terms of the contract between franchisor and franchisee, the testing of the system and its success as a franchise.
On this site, we only feature franchisors who are either:
Full Members of the bfa
Full Members are established franchised businesses with a proven trading and franchising record. They are prepared to have their reputation examined by the bfa, and have an established network of franchisees.
or
Associate Members of the bfa
Associate Members have proven their ability to launch and support at least one franchised outlet for 12 months and are now in the business of building their network. There will be few franchisees whose experience you can research and a short period of time over which the business has been tested.
