THE ZIP YARD
bfa Associate Member
Providing a professional and comprehensive bespoke clothing alterations and repairs service, at competitive prices
The Zip Yard restyles, resizes, mends and customises bridal, formal and party wear, dresses, skirts, blouses and shirts, jeans, trousers, suits, jackets, coats, leather wear, and more. It operates from units on or near the High Street.
The Zip Yard was founded in 2005 after extensive market research identified a gap in the market where it found how very few body shapes conform to the ‘standard’ European sizes found on the High Street. Furthermore, they realised that people no longer had the time or skills to tackle even the simplest of hems let alone risking damage to a favourite or expensive garment.
The Zip Yard is a garments alteration franchise built on the back of quality, speed, convenience and value, delivered through a network of dedicated and hard-working franchise owners. People want their garments, whether they are ‘every day’ items or ‘special occasion’ wear altered by trained professionals they can trust, quickly and efficiently, in clean modern premises. This has led to Centres enjoying a high volume of repeat business on a weekly basis.
Basic Information:
Skills and knowledge required
Franchise Owners need to be dedicated, passionate, focussed and hard working. You do not need to be familiar with repairs or alterations and they are not looking for tailors or tailoresses. You should be ambitious to run their own business, customer driven, well organised and keen to follow a proven business system. The franchise presents you with a fully operational and fully supported business, with trained staff and comprehensive marketing activity.
All Franchise Owners undergo a two week comprehensive induction programme, covering business practices, computer systems, running a centre, marketing and promotions, recruitment, counter sales etc.Training is part classroom based (at Head Office) and part in-centre – for true hands on experience.
Franchise fee
Initial cost is approximately £38,500 + VAT which includes a £15,000 licence fee. To this must be added the cost of a Shop Fit which should be in the range of £15,000-£25,000 depending on unit.
A unit of 600 to 750 sq.ft. seems to the size for a ZipYard Centre – where the initial fit out will include; industrial sewing machines, hemmer, button holer, ironing station, electronic point of sale system, bespoke till and software package, computer, external and internal signage, fitting room, counters, etc.

BRITISH FRANCHISE ASSOCIATION
In 1977, the major franchise companies in the UK decided to set up their own association. The British Franchise Association (bfa), was formed to act in the interests of the industry as a whole in assessing and accrediting franchising companies as those which meet its criteria for the structure of the franchise business, the terms of the contract between franchisor and franchisee, the testing of the system and its success as a franchise.
On this site, we only feature franchisors who are either:
Full Members of the bfa
Full Members are established franchised businesses with a proven trading and franchising record. They are prepared to have their reputation examined by the bfa, and have an established network of franchisees.
or
Associate Members of the bfa
Associate Members have proven their ability to launch and support at least one franchised outlet for 12 months and are now in the business of building their network. There will be few franchisees whose experience you can research and a short period of time over which the business has been tested.
